What are labels for in Blogger?

Friends, today we'll explore another feature, or rather one of the gadgets on the Blogger platform, called Labels. Along the way, we'll also touch on the identical WordPress function of "categories." These are identical widgets that perform the same role. Therefore, to explain how they work, it's not necessary to mention both tags and categories simultaneously, so I'll explain their essence using the blogger tags tool.

There's really nothing much to go into here, as it's all very simple. But I'll try to cover all the nuances of this widget as accurately as possible, as it plays a crucial role in website management.

What are tags and categories?

So, tags in Blogger are, as mentioned above, a gadget or widget, whichever is more convenient, designed to divide website content into specific categories. For example, if the website is about cooking, then you should divide the content into the following categories: first courses, second courses, etc., depending on your imagination. Generally, it's best to create a minimal number of categories to avoid confusion for both yourself and your readers. But this all depends on the size of the website and its subject matter.

In addition to creating categories, tags also create the site's structure, which both visitors and search engines use to navigate the site. Therefore, it's important to make this structure as user-friendly as possible for both visitors and search engines. A breadcrumb widget can help with this. Additionally, for greater convenience, categories can be displayed in the main menu or sidebars as:

1) List.

2) Cloud.

Indexing Tags and Categories

Now, regarding the indexing of category pages. They, like other site pages, should be indexed by search engines, thereby bringing more visitors to the site. Therefore, the category name should include the keywords you intend to use for its promotion. You can also specify accompanying text and graphic design, which will undoubtedly improve its promotion. However, this isn't easy to do on either platform, as there's simply no editor for such pages.

For Blogger users, things aren't so great, since their category pages, unlike WordPress pages, aren't indexed by search engines. Or rather, they can be indexed, but this results in duplicate posts and the site's ranking plummets or simply fails to improve. Therefore, categories on Blogger are hidden from search engines. But this problem can be solved, and we'll soon get to this topic in a separate article: "Indexed Sections." Furthermore, Tags will also play a role, so it's not worth abandoning them.

Fixing the category indexing issue

Blogger how to fix category indexing problem

So, how can you solve the problem of category indexing? It’s quite simple – you can use pages or the posts themselves.

  1. Create page or post.
  2. Write a title.
  3. Add a few lines of text to describe the page with the category, images and videos would also be useful.
  4. Install a special widget that can display posts by tags.

You’ve just learnt one way to automatically solve the problem. It really does work, but if you want better SEO results, then you can do the same as I have: simply go to the homepage of my blog and see how I’ve organised the categories with templates. Go to the pages themselves and have a look at how they appear. All of this has been achieved using Posts, but without using a widget – I do it all manually.

The bottom line

To summarize, what we've learned about Tags and Categories:
  • Create content categories
  • Create site structure
  • Indexed by search engines (not indexed on Blogger)
  • Increase search traffic
